The American Dental Association recommends you see your dentist at least twice each year for your best chance at preventing disease and decay. Even children as young as two should visit the dentist with a parent for a ‘Ride Along Visit,’ and by age three or four a child should have routine visits.
At your checkup, our team will inspect your soft tissues inside the mouth for oral cancer, periodontal disease, and other potential problems and give you advice about daily care. We will inspect each tooth to assess issues like decay, cracks, or older dental work that might need replacing. We are happy to replace metal fillings, inlays, onlays, and crowns with tooth-colored alternatives. At your hygiene visit, we will clean and polish your teeth, removing tartar buildup from below the gumline and inspecting your teeth and gums for signs of decay or disease. We can also provide supplemental fluoride as a preventive measure, which has been proven to strengthen tooth enamel and remineralize areas at risk of decay.
By looking for small trouble spots every six months, we can often reduce your potential for large dental problems later. For instance, left untreated, a small cavity can grow to destroy an entire tooth and spread to surrounding teeth. A cracked tooth can cause pain or break off and create bigger problems. Furthermore, advanced gum disease is the primary cause of tooth loss for American adults, while oral cancer causes more than 7,500 deaths each year. Caught and treated early, these diseases can be controlled.
