Sedation Dentistry

If dental care procedures make you uncomfortable, you’ll be pleased to know about our soothing solution: sedation dentistry. Dr. Hagerty is a highly trained sedation dentist, helping people just like you be more comfortable with attaining their perfect smile. Sedation also allows you to accomplish multiple procedures in fewer appointments, helping you juggle work and other commitments.

We offer a variety of sedation methods, including, oral sedation, intravenous (IV) sedation, and nitrous oxide (laughing gas). During your consultation, Dr. Hagerty will discuss your comfort with each of these to determine the sedation method that’s right for you.

Oral Sedation
Imagine taking a sedative prior to your treatments and drifting into a state of complete calm – where you can respond and express your needs but are totally unaware of treatment details. That’s oral sedation.

Dr. Hagerty may administer nitrous oxide in conjunction with your sedative to enhance relaxation. This is called ‘oral conscious sedation.’ Once you’re free of tension and fear, Dr. Hagerty can complete multiple procedures in a single session.

Oral sedation is safe and effective. It eliminates anxiety to let you comfortably receive the care you need for a fantastic smile and optimal oral health. Your sedation will wear off gradually with no ill effects. Most patients resume normal activities the day following their sedation dentistry appointment.

IV Sedation
Dr. Hagerty may suggest IV sedation for lengthy or complex dental procedures. This is a good choice for patients who have sensitive gag reflexes or who can’t fully open their mouths. Dr. Hagerty is highly trained with specialized certification to administer IV sedation and monitor you throughout your visit. The level of sedation dispensed will depend on the treatments being performed and your unique needs. Following your IV sedation appointment, you’ll likely remember very little or nothing about your procedures. Most patients continue normal activities the day following treatment.

Nitrous Oxide
Commonly called laughing gas, this effective anesthetic is administered through a mask prior to and during your dental treatments. Simply relax and breathe in the soothing gas to alleviate anxiety and eliminate potential discomfort. You’ll be aware of your surroundings and able to respond, but so completely relaxed that you may doze off! This sedation method wears off quickly and lets you get back to your normal routine the same day.
