At Hagerty Dentistry, we take a conservative approach to dental treatment, which means we’d much prefer to help you prevent dental issues from happening in the first place. Preventative dentistry and digital x-rays are ways in which we help patients avoid treatment because we can diagnose certain conditions early on. Dr. John Hagerty, your premiere Lansing dentist, discusses the importance of dental x-rays and if they’re safe.
Digital X-rays vs. Traditional
Digital images are one of the great advances in the world of dentistry. Not only are they safer for our patients, they’re also much better for the environment. Traditional x-rays required chemicals and time to develop, and this meant having to dispose of harmful chemicals and longer wait times before treatment could be discussed. Digital images don’t have to be developed, and they’re instantly available for both doctor and patient to look at.
Digital x-rays expose patients to 90% less radiation than traditional x-rays, in fact you’ll probably get more radiation from just a few hours out in the sun. They also offer a clearer image, which means better diagnosis. They’re easily stored, transferred, or shared with other pertinent providers when necessary.
Digital X-rays and Diagnosis
X-rays are a very important tool that both Dr. Hagerty and Dr. Smith rely on. They allow us to see what’s going with your teeth and mouth internally, often giving us a view of what the naked eye can’t see. This allows for a faster and more accurate diagnosis, and complements our conservative treatment philosophy because we can diagnosis dental issues much earlier on.
We recommend taking x-rays on all of our patients at least once per year. We may also use them to diagnose emergency situations.
